Pilates is a method of exercise first developed in the 1920's by
Joseph Pilates. It focuses on strengthening the body and toning the
muscles through a series of exercises and stretches performed on a
mat with a focus on proper breathing. Pilates is famous for
whittling the waistlines of many celebrities, but few people know
that it was originally used to rehabilitate dancers with injuries.
I started out teaching the original exercises designed by Joseph
Pilates for ballet dancers, but found that they weren't appropriate
for the majority of people who were coming in to take the classes.
They required a lot of core strength, extreme flexibility, and
tended to hurt (!) the neck and even back of "regular" people.
So... I took the original exercises designed for flexible & fit
ballet dancers and adapted them to the needs and limitations of
regular people who often have injuries, are not that flexible, and
tend to be a bit overweight.
In addition to the Pilates based exercises which focus on the core,
I added strength training movements and flowing stretches to create
a flowing, seamless routine which gives you an excellent, enjoyable
workout you can do again and again and again.
I started teaching mat classes in Maui five years ago and have many
of my original students still sticking to it! Nothing could give me
a greater sense of satisfaction than seeing people accomplish their
fitness goals of losing weight, eliminating back pain, and feel good
about themselves
Give Maui Pilates a try and see if you don't feel longer, stronger,
and more relaxed by the end of your first workout! Once you see how
enjoyable exercising can be, you'll have no trouble maintaining a
regular fitness schedule. I look forward to sharing this life
enhancing experience with you at class in Maui or by bringing Maui
Pilates to you at home through the Maui Pilates DVDs.
Once you try it...you'll love it!
See you in class...
